This site documents
the history and ongoing restoration of the former Gulf Colorado & Santa
Fe Railway depot located in downtown Eagle Lake, Texas at 322
East Main Street. Eagle Lake is
approximately 72 miles WSW of downtown Houston, and the depot was
located at milepost 18.2 on the former G.C.&.S.F. (previously Cane
Belt Railroad) line from Sealy south to Matagorda on the Gulf Coast. The photograph
above was taken on November 26, 2006.
At the bottom of the page is a night time shot from November 2005.
Begin with the Cane
Belt History tab and visit the pages in listed order to get the clearest
picture of the railroad operation and how the Eagle Lake depot played
its role. The Cane Belt History page and the
GC&SF Timetables page provide detailed information on some railroad operations in Eagle
Lake proper and over the old Cane Belt. The Maps page
provides several Sanborn Fire Map details of the area around the Santa
Fe depot, and includes a 1913 Track Layout of Eagle Lake at the bottom. The Depot History
page traces the history of both the depot and issues surrounding its
construction, along with some architectural notes. The Agent's
Office, Waiting Room, and Baggage Room pages provide some views of these restored
areas and their functions. The Exterior page shows progress
on the outside. The Items Found page shows some of
the artifacts that were uncovered during restoration. Finally, the
RR Scene in Eagle Lake page shows some railroad related images
from the area.
Like the building
itself, this web site is a work in progress. It will be updated
periodically with pertinent information as time permits. Hope you
enjoy your visit!
